Why the HELL am I awake right now?

24 May

According to my alarm clock, it is 1:37 am.  This means I am expected to report to work in 3 hours 23 minutes.  At this moment I am very tired and yet there seems to be no chance I will fall back asleep.  So I’ve decided to stay up.  As usual, this seems like a great idea right now.  In a few hours, I’ll probably hate myself.  I rarely bother to set my alarm clock, by the way, because I wake up at least once every hour or so anyhow, and I seem to be capable of waking up whenever I want to without the benefit of an alarm.  Unless of course I’m extremely drunk.  But then there’s a good chance my alarm won’t wake me up anyway, so the point becomes moot.

Back in the old days, this is what you would see if you turned on the television at this time of day.

Insomnia is something I’ve had to deal with for as long as I can remember.  It is particularly bad for me in the summertime, when it is virtually impossible to comfortably bury myself under a massive pile of blankets and pillows.  (The manner in which I most like to sleep)  Also, when it comes right down to it, I don’t really like sleeping all that much.  A common catchphrase of mine is:  “There will be plenty of time for sleep when I’m dead.”  The main problem I have with sleeping is I tend to think of it as time I could be doing stuff.

Not only that, I’ve been sick for the past 3 days, and have spent the vast majority of that time laying around drifting in and out of restless slumber, anyway.  So I’m not entirely certain how much “down time” I’ve actually had.

Now it is 2:08 a.m.  My work day looms ever closer on the horizon.  I’m bouncing back and forth between two options:  1.) Brew a pot of coffee.  2.) Try to take a short nap.    Somehow neither seems like a good idea.  So instead I think I will sit here and continue to work on this random blog post.  Simply to fill space, here is a list of things I accomplished today.

1.)  Slept off and on all day.  (I think I already established that.)

2.)  Watched the vast majority of the second season of South Park.

3.)  Played several games of solitaire on my computer.  (I’m particularly addicted to the variety known as “Freecell.”  There are something like 200 million possible deal outs and I’m determined to beat every single one.  I’m up to 1497.

4.)  Logged onto Wikipedia to make sure Abe Vigoda is still alive.  This is something I do every day.  (Turns out he is.)

5.)  Logged onto Facebook to let all my friends know that Abe Vigoda is still alive.  Most of them probably don’t know who he is.  (Some of them do.)  The select few who read my Facebook posts and my blogs will find me very redundant today.  I even used the same picture.   I could have found a different one but I didn’t feel like it.  I like this one.  (It’s from the Godfather.)

6.)  Checked my bank account several times to see if I’ve been “paid” yet.  It should happen any time now.  Last time I checked (about 10 minutes ago) there was still only 1 dollar and two cents in there.  I’m looking forward to eating something besides  fish sticks and tater tots, which is pretty much all I’ve had to eat for the last week.  This has something to do with the fact that I spent all my money at a comic book convention last weekend.  It probably also has something to do with why I’m sick, seeing as how there were some 18 THOUSAND other people there too, most of them no doubt carrying all manner of infectious diseases.  There will be more about that in my next blog post.  First though, I wish to complete some accompanying drawings of said comic book convention.  I also want alcohol.  Which I have also not had money to buy.

Do I really need alcohol to write?  No.  But it makes it more fun.

Fuck this I’m making coffee.
