Ann Arbor After Armageddon

4 Jul

I had always considered myself a pretty nice person, but the thing is, I kind of secretly hated everyone.  It wasn’t that I disliked individual people;  In fact quite the opposite was true.  Anytime I had a friendly conversation with someone, and I mean anyone, whether they were rich or poor, conservative or liberal, black or white, male or female, old or young, I liked them and could even go so far as to consider them a friend.   As soon as that “Stranger Boundary” was broken, I found it easy to recognize that they were, in almost all cases, more like me than different from me, even if we wore different clothes. liked different movies or music, voted for different types of politicians (or not at all.)  But until that Golden Moment when a friendly verbal exchange had taken taken place, they had been perceived as obstacles in my way.  And I mean literally.  Anytime I was was trying to get somewhere,  (anywhere) it always seemed like there was some motherfucker in my way!  Taking their sweet ass time!  Texting on their phone!  Walking two by two, slow as a constipated turtle, taking up the entire fucking sidewalk!   (Grrrrrr…)  The negative vibes always far outweighed the positive.  I always figured I was destined to become a grumpy, bitter old man, assuming I lived long enough.  (Though I always figured I would at least have a good sense of humor about it)

So imagine my delight when I woke up one snowy winter morn to discover I had become The Omega Man!  (Just like Charlton Heston in that one movie of the same name.)

I left my apartment, crossed the street, with very little difficulty, and headed up the hill.

10

The so called “Party Center” did not seem to be, as usual… happening.

25

My favorite view of my town was even more peaceful than usual.

40

And I had arrived in the so called “Downtown District.”

47

There were no “texting scum” in my way.

53

Main Street had never been so exciting!

57

Look at all those beggars!  (Oh wait, never mind!)

58

I suspected it would be a long time before a bus came along.

66

A view from above.

82

And back on the street.

86

89

This was once known as “The Diag”  Usually it is very difficult to traverse without being hassled by homeless people, political activists and/or bible thumpers.  (Today there were no such issues.)

99

I made it all the way through with no harassment of any kind, for the first time ever.

107

But was unable to acquire sweet and sour chicken.

112

117

123

I thought I might at least be able to stir up some zombie action if I strolled through the local graveyard.

134

Alas even that effort was doomed for failure.

181

So I decided to head back towards the direction of my home.

187

There wasn’t much need for the traffic island at this point, but I like stopping at them anyway.  (I think of them as places for reflection.)

210

I spotted a restaurant I have always found grossly overrated. At last the proper amount of traffic seemed to be passing through.

236

Eventually I came to a long , long corridor that seemed very familiar to me.

241

And found a bench to sit in and wait for I didn’t know what.

The End.

Those photos of the dead Ann Arbor are AMAZING!! I definitely want to go with you this year for a day like that! I promise not to be annoying, or move as slow as a “constipated turtle!” I’ll also turn my phone off, or at least set it to vibrate and ignore it.

OR…we could film a zombie movie. (Assuming we can actually get people organized.)
